Speaker Q&A

All Speakers

Audience Member: How can you foster a vision in a church that can be narrow-minded or visionless? Should you switch churches in that situation?

Audience Member: Do you have other examples of repurposing buildings besides housing?

Audience Member: These new visions for church properties sound great in an urban context, but what about rural/suburban congregations located in the middle of nowhere?

Audience Member: Is the idea of a holy, sacred sanctuary where God dwells, used only for worship once a week, not relevant or even unscriptural (Acts 17:24)? Should we move away from that concept and rather make multi-use spaces in which we happen to worship once a week?

Audience Member: How will ownership and management of your projects work if and when the individual struggling church goes out of business?

Audience Member: I love the transportation innovations like the safe parking program in Monrovia. In our work in transportation safety and access, infrastructure and design dominates while support for survivors of collisions is a widespread need. Have the presenters seen faithful innovations or programs working well in that space?

Rev. Dr. Patrick Duggan

Executive Director | United Church of Christ Building and Loan Fund
Senior Pastor | Congregational Church of South Hempstead | South Hempstead, NY

Audience Member: You mentioned a church that was struggling and that owned a whole block. You were able to developed a mixed-use complex on their property. What is the current health of that church as a congregation?

PD: The church remains healthy, vibrant, serving 10K people a month through food ministry and other activities.

Dr. Jill Shook

Executive Director | Making Housing and Community Happen

Audience Member: Several people are wondering this… In your experience, what defines Affordable Housing – both generally speaking and in Pasadena? Can you give a rough range, both for Pasadena and more generally around the U.S. and Canada? Is it a percentage of Income? Median Area Price?  Something else?

Audience Member: Could you explain a little more what a community land trust (CLT) is and how it works?

Audience Member: How do NYMBYs and Gentrification affect your work?

Audience Member: For accessory dwelling units (ADUs) is there a requirement for owner occupation of any of the dwellings?

Audience Member: One audience member in the Seattle area mentioned that they have a Church in their city that's currently in a battle to build Affordable housing.  Hundreds of angry citizens are showing up to public meetings because they don't want Low Barrier housing. What advice do you have for this church?

Audience Member: Can you comment on the level of cooperation with (and reaction of) city planning staff? How hard a “sell” has this been to permit given existing zoning regulations?

Ryan VerWys

President and CEO | Inner City Christian Federation | Grand Rapids, MI

Audience Member: Is the 415 Franklin video available online? I would like to share it with my colleagues.

RVW: Thanks everyone for your interest in the video: this was a "sneak preview" of the video, we're premiering it at our annual fundraising dinner this Thursday night, it will be posted on YouTube following that event.

Chris Elisara

Leadership Committee Chair | CNU-MCC

Audience Member: What efforts is CNU-MCC as an organization making to enable work like Patrick’s, Jill’s, and Ryan’s happen?
